Summer Boating Without the Breakdowns
There’s nothing like a summer day on Port Hacking or Botany Bay. But every season, boats break down on their first trip out. Batteries fail, trailers collapse, or engines overheat. Most of these breakdowns are preventable with a pre-season service.
Here’s Webbe Service’s pre-season boat service checklist, tailored for Sydney boaters.
1. Batteries & Electrics
Test your batteries. If they don’t hold charge, replace them. Inspect wiring for corrosion, check radios and GPS, and make sure your navigation lights are working.
2. Fuel System
Fuel goes stale fast. Replace filters, check hoses for cracks, and drain or top up tanks with fresh fuel. Dirty fuel is a leading cause of breakdowns.
3. Cooling System
Your impeller should be changed annually. Flush the system and make sure your tell-tale is strong. Overheating is the #1 cause of ruined outboards.
4. Engine & Anodes
Change oil and filters, inspect spark plugs, and replace worn anodes. Anodes are cheap insurance against corrosion.
5. Trailer & Safety Gear
Your trailer is as important as your engine. Check bearings, brakes, and tyres. Test trailer lights. Update safety gear: jackets, flares, extinguisher.
Why It Matters
Marine Rescue NSW reports most call-outs involve flat batteries and fuel issues. A pre-season check eliminates 90% of these problems.
